As the Ashes series reaches its climax, cricket history has been made off the field: someone has made a good album about the game. The Duckworth Lewis Method, an Irish duo, show they are true fans by taking their name from the unfathomable way, devised by two English mathematicians, of settling rain-affected one-day matches.

The singer is Neil Hannon, the guy from The Divine Comedy with the deep voice and the sly wit. He and Thomas Walsh have written 12 songs that set smart cricketing lyrics to deft pastiches of pop genres from glam to music hall. The highlight is Jiggery Pokery, which celebrates with great flair a single Ashes moment: Shane Warne’s wonderball to Mike Gatting. The whole thing is like an England win: exhilaratingly unexpected.
